The Puyallup Tribe Sustainability Program, in partnership with the Tacoma Tree Foundation, hosted a community Tree share on March 7.
The event featured a range of native shrubs and trees available in various sizes, including Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, osoberry and more. Members of the community were able to discuss with volunteers of the foundation which plants to choose and learn how to take care of them properly.
Tacoma Tree Foundation Planting Director Jaala Smith explained that many of the available plants come from donations by research facilities and conservationists. With funding sourced in part by the Puyallup Tribe along with the Puyallup-White River Watershed Small Grant program, community members were able to take the plants home free of charge.
“If we can remove one barrier to accessing plants and trees, we get closer to broadening our tree canopy and making healthier and happier neighborhoods,” Smith said.
