A special Puyallup Pride flag will be raised as part of the ceremony; food, booths and entertainment will be part of the event.
The Puyallup Tribe of Indians will host a Pride Festival this Sunday, July 14, to honor Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2) communities.
The community event, which takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at Tribal Administration, 3009 Portland Ave. E., is open to all who wish to support and celebrate LGBTQIA2 Tribal members, family, and friends.
The Puyallup Tribal Council passed a resolution last month to declare July as Pride Month and to celebrate it annually. Council also voted to support this year’s Tacoma Pride festival.
“I am proud to be part of a Tribal Council that recognizes and loves all of its citizens,” Councilmember Annette Bryan said. “We are making it very clear that we are accepting all walks of life, and encourage others to be accepting as well. Being inclusive is who we are as Puyallup people.”
“Our people have long been known for being generous and welcoming,” Tribal Council Chairman David Z. Bean said. “Council’s resolution is a clear affirmation that we are welcoming to all people – in the past, today, and in the future.”
The event on July 14 will include performances, informational and photo booths, face painting and a flag-raising ceremony. Speakers will include members of Tribal Council as well as Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, state Rep. Laurie Jinkins, and Tacoma City Councilmember Ryan Mello. All three guest speakers along with Councilmember Bryan helped raise the Pride flag over the Tacoma Dome on July 9.
