National Diabetes Month

Cooking-Demo-Ad Wellness-Workshops-Dec-2019

November is National Diabetes month, which is a time to bring awareness to diabetes and encourage people to make healthy changes. Native Americans are at a higher risk for diabetes. It is important to learn the signs, symptoms and prevention tools necessary to live a healthy life.

Puyallup Tribal Health Authority (PTHA) diabetes program, offers a variety of services to help strive for good health. This past July, PTHA started offering wellness workshops to help prevent and/or treat diabetes.

Some of the past topics of the wellness workshop have included glucose monitoring, medication, education and sugar intake.

PTHA also offers cooking classes on the first Thursday of every month. The next class will be offered on Dec 5 at the community health kitchen. The class will feature soup recipes, food samples, label readings and more!

Many people are unaware they have diabetes in the early stages as there are little to no symptoms.

Symptoms to look for:

  • Very thirsty
  • Tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Tingling in hands or feet
  • Urinating more
  • Weight loss
  • Frequent infections
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
