Pierce County Emergency Management is looking for tribal members and community members who are ham radio operators to participate in a volunteer disaster preparedness program.
The Western Washington District 5 Amateur Radio Emergency Services serves Pierce County. Its members are licensed operators who volunteer for communications duties during times of disaster, such as earthquake, flooding and severe storms.
“This would be important during a catastrophic incident for communication and sometimes in devastated areas a ham radio operator is the only means of communication,” said Debbie Bailey with Pierce County Emergency Management. The agency coordinates with the Tribe’s Public Safety Department on emergency preparedness.
Training for the program is available through the Radio Club of Tacoma.
