Tacoma City Council officially recognized November as Native American Heritage Month, with Puyallup Tribal Council Chairman Bill Sterud in attendance as the proclamation was read on Tuesday, Nov.7.
“The City of Tacoma recognizes that Native American tribes have made and continue to make invaluable contributions to the diversity, arts, knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy and economy in the state of Washington,” Deputy Mayor Kristina Walker said as part of the proclamation. “Their historical and cultural contributions, particularly those of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, have substantially shaped the past, present and future of this city.”
Chairman Sterud expressed his appreciation to Tacoma City Council for the proclamation and the work it has done with the Tribe.
“There’s a cooperative agreement between the city of Tacoma and the Puyallup Tribe, and we’ve got a future together,” Sterud said. “So, let’s make it a good future. Let’s take this community skyward. Our problems are just like your problems: homeless, crime, drugs. We’re fighting all that, too, and I hope we’re fighting it together.”
